FED: Clinton failed to show WTO leadership Anderson

Deputy Prime Minister JOHN ANDERSON says United States President BILL CLINTON failed
to show leadership in the collapsed Word Trade Organisation negotiations in Seattle.

Mr ANDERSON has told ABC Radio that CLINTON played to domestic politics at a time when
a strong US should have been able to carry the talks forward to the benefit of all.

The National Party leader has accused the European Union of intransigence, saying massive
subsidies, particularly in agriculture, results in the EU producing too much.

Mr ANDERSON says the key now is whether or not President CLINTON picks up on his claim
that the WTO can narrow the gap between industrialised and developing nations.
