Supported by growing demands both at home and abroad, China is expected to become the world's largest producer of spandex in 2005. In China, there are ten major spandex producers. The total production capacity will reach approximately 26,500 ton/year after the completion of capacity expansion projects.
The dry-spinning process accounts for 83% of total spandex production (15,000 ton/year), while, the wet-spinning process occupies 6%, 1,100 tons. The share of solution-spinning process is 11%, 2,000 tons.
As a result of growing spandex demand, China is forecast to overtake Korea within two years to become the world's largest producer. The production capacity is projected to increase by 15% in the next five years.
For now, China imports a large amount of spandex from Japan and Korea to meet increasing demands. The annual demand volume is equivalent to 16% of the world's output.
Recently, the applications of spandex have expanded from swimwear to stretch denim, sportswear, sweaters, warmth-retentive shirts, etc.
