WA: Govt announces review of child protection department

The West Australian government has announced a review of its community development
department .. amid calls for a royal commission into why so many children at risk are
dying.

Community Development Minister DAVID TEMPLEMAN says the review will entrench child
protection as the department's number one priority.

But opposition leader PAUL OMODEI wants a royal commission .. to find out why children
known to the community development department are dying.

In the past four years the department has been notified by the coroner of 290 child
deaths from unnatural or unknown causes.

159 of these have had some form of contact with the department.
