Vic: Newsreader Brian Naylor and wife die in Kinglake fire
By Jamie Duncan
MELBOURNE, Feb 8 AAP - Former Nine and Seven network newsreader Brian Naylor and his
wife Moiree died when Victoria's single deadliest bushfire, the Kinglake Complex, razed
their property on Saturday.
Naylor, 78, and his wife had lived for many years at the property on Coombs Road, Kinglake
West, where a fire front raced through on Saturday, killing 10 people in the tiny settlement
of Kinglake West alone.
The property is close to the western edge of the heavily timbered Kinglake National park.

30 June 2011 -- Bwin.party (LON:BPTY) saw its shares gain 11.5% to 148.34p on news that the licence of Full Tilt, one of the world's leading online poker websites, has been revoked, the Financial Times reported.
The Channel Island of Alderney's gambling commission issued a statement saying that Full Tilt's licence has been suspended with immediate effect and the company must stop all its operations. The move by Alderney was prompted by the results of a special investigation into Full Tilt after the US authorities pressed a series of charges, including bank fraud and money laundering, against the company and its founders in April.
Although outlawed in the US, Full Tilt and the other leading online operators such as PokerStars have been stealing market share from Bwin.party's online poker business in Europe where such services are legal.

FED:James Price land buy invalid: judge
PERTH, Dec 6 AAP - Compulsory land acquisition notices issued by the West Australian
government for Woodside Petroleum's proposed Browse gas hub at James Price Point were
unlawful, a court has found.
Traditional land owners, the Jabbir Jabbir people represented by Neil Patrick McKenzie,
and the Goolarabooloo people represented by Phillip James Roe, had a victory on Tuesday
when chief Justice Wayne Martin declared three notices of land acquisition as invalid.
Justice Martin, of the WA Supreme Court, said the notices did not contain descriptions
of the land required.
However, his declaration did not prevent Lands Minister Brendon Grylls from issuing
further notices of intent to take land in the area.
Mr Roe's lawyer Michael Orlov told reporters that Mr Grylls would need to commence
the process again.
"The immediate practical effect of this judgement is the Browse project agreement,
which depended on the validity of these notices, is invalid and has no effect," Mr Orlov
said.
"The minister can commence again but it is a long process and we'll have to see what he does."
Mr Roe said the fight was not over.
"There's more to come and I'll be still going hard at it," he told journalists.
"I can do the next step that I want to do: I'll go back and look after my songline
and my heritage and culture."
Mr Orlov said proceedings to declare the songline area an Aboriginal site under the
Aboriginal Heritage Act would probably commence early next week.
Asked whether the proceedings could halt development, Mr Orlov said "Yes, they can".
"The area where the project is being developed is an Aboriginal site and has been since
1991," Mr Orlov said.
"Any ground disturbing work in the area should have been approved by the minister under
the Heritage Act.
"It hasn't been, so until that approval is obtained, it may well have an impact (on
the development)."

VIC:4WDs common in driveway deaths
By Mariza O'Keefe
MELBOURNE, April 1 AAP - Abandoning the four-wheel drive as the family car would help
prevent driveway fatalities, a children's safety group says.
Of the 13 children involved in driveway-related fatalities in Victoria since 2000,
10 were killed by a 4WD or truck, figures released by the Coroners Court show.
Even more alarmingly, since December there have been three driveway deaths in Victoria.
In the most recent case a one-year-old boy was struck by his father's Audi 4WD when he
went to retrieve a toy that rolled under the car at Hillside on February 15.
Kidsafe Australia president Mark Stokes said driveway fatalities were easy to prevent
and one step in doing this was abandoning the 4WD as the family car.
"We don't like them one bit. They are more dangerous on the road for the people they
hit. They are more dangerous on the road for the people in them when they hit things,"
Dr Stokes said.
Dr Stokes said many parents were buying 4WDs under the mistaken assumption that they
were safer, but the driveway fatality figures backed Kidsafe's belief that they were not.
"Parents are buying these cars because they think they are safer and what they do is
they end up killing their own children with them," he said.
He suggested station wagons were a much safer option for families.
The figures also showed children aged between one and three accounted for 69 per cent
of child driveway deaths.
Road policing strategy group Acting Inspector John Gibson said drivers of large cars
with small children needed to be extra vigilant.
"We know that small children are often difficult to see if you are in a large vehicle
and we also know that the implications of children being injured as a result of being
hit by a vehicle are much more likely to be fatal because they are so small and fragile,"
he said.
Many of the driveway deaths also occurred during busy periods of the day when families
were leaving the house for school and work or in the evening when they were returning
home.
A group made up of Victoria Police, the Coroners Prevention Unit and other agencies
have released a set of safety tips for families around driveways.
The safety tips include:
* Where possible separate children's play areas from driveways with fences and self-closing
gates.
* Always lock vehicles to prevent children from playing in them.
* If you're the only adult at home and need to move a car, place children securely
in the vehicle while you move it.
Toyota, which sold more than 50,000 SUVs in Australia last year, said it expected motorists
to drive safely.
"Toyota Australia would expect drivers, regardless of the vehicle they are driving,
to obey all road safety rules and practice safe driving whether on public roads or private
property," a company spokesperson said in a statement.
Reverse cameras and sensors are fitted on some of Toyota's 4WD models but are not standard
on the popular Prado and Rav4 vehicles.
The manufacturer, however, is in the process of including the technology in its entire range.

FED:Mal Brough joins LNP
(Eds: reissuing, clarifying lead)
By Andrea Hayward
CANBERRA, Dec 10 AAP - Former Howard government minister Mal Brough has joined the
ranks of the Queensland LNP, which he once described as an abomination.
Mr Brough said in a statement late on Friday most people would be aware of critical
comment he made regarding the LNP, particularly in its formative stages after he tried
to stop the merger of the coalition parties as Liberal Party president.
The former Queensland MP said he would run for preselection for the federal seat of
Fisher, aspired to be a minister in the coalition and harboured ambitions to be the prime
minister.
Whether he achieved the top job was another matter, he said, but it was important not
to pretend just to make up the numbers in politics.
"I want to have as senior a leadership role as I possibly can," he told Fairfax Radio.
When the Liberal and National parties merged in Queensland, Mr Brough, the former member
for the federal seat of Longman, said he would never join the LNP.
"These comments need to be seen in the context of what was occurring at the time," he said.
"Like many major political events, the decision to form the LNP was hotly debated.
"People of goodwill were on all sides of the debate - but as often happens, there were
some with ulterior motives that peddled misinformation and confusion, which was never
in the interest of the non-Labor side of politics."
Mr Brough said the LNP had fought several individuals and they had been expelled or
suspended since the merger.
"It is true to say that if I had known then what I know now about the LNP, those comments
would never have been made."
LNP director Michael O'Dwyer said LNP members had been accepting of Mr Brough's application
and there had been some excitement about him and his wife Sue joining the party.
"I think he's appreciated the honesty and openness and frankness with which the executive
of the LNP has gone through the process with him and he clearly understands what the LNP
is about and its transparency and appreciates it," Mr O'Dwyer told AAP.
"And he certainly recognises the LNP for what it is, especially following the success
of the LNP at the federal election.
"He's welcome on board and he's become a member of the party which is great, so we
just keep on growing."
Mr Brough said there were people who had been hurt by his earlier comments but these
had been discussed openly and honestly with the party.
In 11 years in federal politics, Mr Brough progressed to becoming a minister and was
a member of the Howard cabinet, in which he held the portfolios of families, community
services and indigenous affairs from January 2006 to November 2007.
He lost Longman at the 2007 federal election. It was regained this year by LNP MP Wyatt
Roy, the nation's youngest ever sitting MP.

NSW: Posties protest planned as strike is on

NSW: Posties protest planned as strike is on
SYDNEY, Dec 22 AAP - Postal workers plan to rally outside Australia Post's Sydney headquarters
on Tuesday after a last minute deal to avert strikes failed to materialise late on Monday
night.
Communication, Electrical and Plumbing Union (CEPU) workers were scheduled to walk
off the job at midnight (AEDT), beginning industrial action which could last until Christmas
Day and potentially cause significant delays in the postal system.
The union's NSW secretary Jim Metcher told AAP on Monday night there had been no last
minute negotiations between his organisation and Australia Post management and he expected
a big turnout at the protest rally in Cleveland Street at noon (AEDT).
"We've had record numbers of postal workers joining the union in recent weeks and in
the last few days because they are planning, they want to strike," he said.
"We expect a lot to strike and we expect a very big turnout at the protest."
The union says the dispute is about service and job security.
Mr Metcher said Australia Post had cut hundreds of jobs in the past three months and
full-time workers had been replaced with casuals and part-timers.
The replacement workers had been unable to cope with the volume of work and in some
cases had failed to deliver mail or even dumped it, he said.
Mr Metcher also dismissed claims by Australia Post on Monday that the union reneged
on a deal agreed upon more than two years ago.
An Australia Post spokesman told AAP that a deal had been agreed in 2007 and that the
union put out a directive saying they would put it to their members.
But the deal had not been put to the members and the union had begun making extra claims,
the Australia Post spokesman said.
Mr Metcher dismissed the claim, saying no deal had been struck.
"There was never an agreement. If there was it would've been put to the members," he told AAP.
"Australia Post could have put any such deal to the workers as well, those who are
not union members, but they didn't."
Australia Post says it will draft in casual workers to help ease any delays in the postal system.
It says around three quarters of the workforce may still work on Tuesday - a figure
disputed by CEPU.

Qld: Bligh says Kokoda crash will touch many hearts
BRISBANE, Aug 12 AAP - Queensland Premier Anna Bligh says anxiety over the fate of
nine Australians missing after a plane crash in Papua New Guinea will be specially poignant
for their fellow Australians.
Two Queenslanders, Dr June Canavan and Keith Gracie, both from the Sunshine Coast,
were among the passengers aboard the aircraft headed for the Kokoda Track.
The plane's wreckage was found on Wednesday morning, and rescuers are trying to reach
the site in rugged terrain. It is not known if anyone on board has survived.
Ms Bligh told ABC Radio the offices of the prime minister and foreign affairs minister
were in touch with her about the crash.
"Because it is Kokoda, it does hold a special place in the hearts of Australians, and
we all know so many people who have made the pilgrimage up there that I think many people
feel very connected to this story," she said.
"There's a very anxious wait ahead. I hope that there is some news one way or the other
to put people out of that anxiety.
"This is a difficult time."

Fed: WA Labor has 17-seat lead - poll
SYDNEY, Aug 30 AAP - Western Australia's Carpenter Labor government would be returned
with close to a 17-seat majority if the state election was held today, a Westpoll shows.
One week out from the WA state election, the swing the Liberal Party created with Colin
Barnett's return to the leadership has stalled.
Labor now enjoys a 54-46 per cent lead on a two-party basis, according to the Westpoll
conducted for the West Australian newspaper and published by Fairfax today.
The Westpoll shows the Liberal Party vote has returned to around the 35 per cent level
of the 2005 state election.
If that result were to be repeated next Saturday, Labor would command a 17-seat majority
under the new one vote, one value boundaries.
The poll comes after a week in which Mr Carpenter is generally believed to have won
the leader's debate on Monday night.

Fed: Chinese students say huge crowds made for successful relay
By Julian Drape and Cathy Alexander
CANBERRA, April 24 AAP - A Chinese students' group says it was surprised so many Chinese
flocked to Canberra to "protect the torch" on the sole appearance of the Olympic flame
in Australia.
The Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) ran a web-based campaign to encourage
students from across the country to gather in the nation's capital for today's Olympic
torch relay.
As many as 15,000 Chinese arrived by bus, car and plane to cheer on the torch, many
waving large red Chinese flags.
Canberra-based CSSA organiser Zhang Rongan said he was thrilled so many students answered
the call.
"We were thinking initially at the most 5,000, but it turns out more than 20,000 came,"
Mr Zhang told AAP.
He said students paid their own travel costs to Canberra and weren't funded in any
way by the CSSA.
"They just rented the buses to get down the cost," he said.
"They paid their own way. Nobody could afford to pay for so many people.
"They were voluntary to come here. You can't organise so many people."
So many pro-China demonstrators arrived in Canberra that their organisers asked them
not to use public toilets or local buses for fear of inconveniencing local people.
Demonstrator Raymond Wang, who will spend 16 hours on the bus today travelling between
Melbourne and Canberra, said Chinese organisers gave the order on the bus.
"We don't want to interrupt local public order," the student said.
Mr Wang said more than 60 buses travelled from Melbourne.
"Chinatown will be empty," he said.
Mr Wang denied the demonstrators had been bused in or paid by Chinese authorities.
Participation was voluntary, and they had paid $50 each for the bus trip, he said.
Fellow protester Les Cui, of Melbourne, was pleased there were so few human rights
protesters at the relay, which proceeded more smoothly than in other western capitals
such as London and Paris.
"I thought there would be some more protesters," he said.
Mr Wang said western countries were ill-informed about Tibet, and the media were "not
telling the truth".
"Tibet is, was and always will be a part of China," he said.
Mr Wang said he was proud of his country, and the Olympics were a good opportunity
to show the world the "real China".
Chinese students were now looking forward to a "very successful" Olympics in August,
CSSA's Mr Zhang said.

What Australian newspapers say on Wednesday, August 15, 2007=2
The Canberra Times says Australians should welcome the news that the High Court's female
representation has been doubled with the appointment of Susan Kiefel.
In other respects, Kiefel's appointment was exactly what might have been expected from
an attempt by the Howard government to mould the High Court in its own ideological image,
as she is regarded as a conservative, `black-letter' lawyer.
"Thanks to its longevity, the Howard government has had a greater opportunity than
most - this is its sixth appointment - to stack the court with conservative judges," the
paper says.
"Kiefel's appointment [should not be equated] with a judicial breath of fresh air:
in the short-term, at least, we will get competence but very little colour."
Adelaide's The Advertiser says South Australia's health system is world class with
highly competent specialists, doctors and nurses staffing the state's major hospitals.
Photos in yesterday's Advertiser of patients at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital lying
in beds in crowded waiting rooms are distressing, but must be viewed in the context of
mid-winter demand for medical treatment exacerbated by a flu epidemic.
"Health Minister John Hill is, rightly, establishing 24-hour regional medical centres
which can absorb many of the cases now being handled by hospital emergency and outpatient
departments," the paper says.
"South Australians should have confidence in their health and hospital system, and
a genuine expectation of further improvement."
Hobart's The Mercury says amid stock market jitters, the turbulent federal election
campaign and a bitter pulp mill debate, new Tasmanian investment figures are encouraging.
Consultancy firm Access Economics says nearly $8 billion worth of investment has been
announced in the 12 months to June, 44 per cent more than the year before.
"An encouraging sign is that investments are being made in almost all sectors of the
economy, from retail to agriculture and mining, by both government and private enterprise,
involving businesses large and small," the paper says.
"Economic growth brings its own problems, with fears of a widening gap between those
enriched by the changes and others pressured by rising costs of rent, food, petrol and
power."
Darwin's Northern Territory News says much of the effort to end indigenous disadvantage
is aimed at tackling alcohol abuse.
The NT government is spending millions of dollars a year on combating the problem but
gambling is also at crisis levels.
"Heavy gambling is part of the addictive behaviour that is widespread among indigenous
people ... caused [by] the sense of worthlessness that comes from dispossession," the
paper says.
"Rebuilding the self-esteem of Aboriginal people will take a generation of commitment
by Territory and federal governments."
Perth's The West Australian says nothing has happened to change the newspaper's view
that making Paul Omodei leader of WA's parliamentary Liberal Party was a breathtaking
piece of stupidity which would spread gloom among the party's supporters and glee in the
WA government.
The opposition led by Mr Omodei is effective in neither of its crucial jobs, which
are to check and test the government on its use of authority and to present itself to
voters as a feasible alternative.
"Tt is a symptom of the disarray in the party that, for all the ambitions festering
in it, no one else wants the job - for now," the paper says.
"It is well past time for the WA Liberals to come to their senses, acknowledge that
the party is in crisis, set aside old grievances and self-interest and unify to remake
it as a political force."
Brisbane's The Courier-Mail says despite a flu epidemic, the worst drought for more
than 100 years and disruptive roadworks, crowds will still turn out at the Brisbane Exhibition
for the People's Day public holiday.
The 10-day show is the event that brings the city and the bush together.
"Since the first Brisbane Show, the Exhibition has been a social highlight each year
except two: 1919, the year of a great influenza epidemic; and 1942, when the showgrounds
became a camp and staging post for troops preparing for war," the paper says.
"The drop in crowds this year is being blamed on the national flu outbreak."

Fed: ASIC move on Hardie sends right signal - Labor
CANBERRA, Feb 15 AAP - Civil proceedings initiated by the Australian Securities and
Investments Commission (ASIC) against James Hardie Industries is an opportunity to reinforce
good corporate standards, Labor says.
ASIC is suing the building products company plus 10 current and former executives and
directors for allegedly misleading investors over its compensation payouts for asbestos
victims.
The legal action comes after James Hardie shareholders last week voted in favour of
a $4.5 billion compensation payout to a fund for asbestos sufferers, ending six years
of wrangling.
"Victims for James Hardie finally got certainty on their compensation last week, but
it has been a long time coming," Labor's spokeswoman on corporate governance and responsibility
Senator Penny Wong said in a statement.
"The company and its executives should now be held to account for their initial actions,
which could have left victims without proper compensation."
Senator Wong said Labor particularly welcomed ASIC's indication its proceedings would
not impact on the compensation deal.
"Labor's top priority has always been - and remains - justice and fair compensation
for asbestos victims," she said.

Fed: NT residents urged to seek shelter ahead of Monica
DARWIN, April 23 AAP - Police have urged residents at Nhulunbuy in the Northern Territory
to urgently seek shelter as the community awaits category five Cyclone Monica.
The cyclone, which brought widespread flooding to north Queensland last week, is moving
towards Arnhem Land, including the Aboriginal community of Nhulunbuy and the nearby mining
township of Gove, and is expected to make landfall within hours.
Wind gusts of up to 120kph have already been reported, while flood warnings have been
issued for coastal areas.
The Bureau of Meteorology has warned residents to prepare for "very destructive" wind
gusts of up to 320kph, when Monica's core hits far north regions of Arnhem Land later
today.
A cyclone watch has been extended west to include Darwin, Jabiru and the Tiwi Islands,
with the storm not expected to lose intensity as it moves west along the north coast.
The Nhulunbuy Counter Disaster Controller (NCDC) issued a statement at 8am (CST) advising
conditions were already at "a dangerous level" and urged residents to move to their selected
shelters immediately.
A public shelter, which can accommodate up to 800 people, has been established at the
western end of the Gove Hospital.
Hundreds of people spent the night in the shelter, with more moving there early today.
Police advised people to take food and provisions with them and to prepare to remain
in their selected shelters for up to 24 hours.
"The cyclone is slow moving and wide ranging so the effects of it are likely to be
prolonged," police said in a statement.
"Police advise people to have plenty of supplies with them as you may not be able to
move from your shelter for anything up to 24 hours."
Residents have also been advised not to drive or move about outside until the area
is declared safe by the NCDC.
A police spokeswoman at Nhulunbuy said wind and rainy conditions had already started.
"The wind has picked up a little bit and certainly it is cloudy and we are getting
sprinkles of rain, but nothing too drastic at the moment," she said.
"We are pretty prepared."

ST. LOUIS MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES.
Fairview Heights, Ill. -- The following information was released by the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Illinois:
A St. Louis, Missouri, man pled guilty on June 22, 2011, in Federal District Court in East St. Louis, to a two-count Indictment charging, in Count 1, Possession of Child Pornography, and, in Count 2, Transportation of Child Pornography, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, Stephen R. Wigginton, announced today. Because Daniel Lee Scalf, 31, was previously convicted of a sex offense involving a minor, he faces increased penalties on both counts. On Count 1, Scalf faces a term of imprisonment of not less than ten (10) years up to twenty (20) years' imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of five (5) years to life. On Count 2, Scalf faces a term of imprisonment of not less than fifteen (15) years up to forty (40) years' of imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000, and not less than five years to a lifetime term of supervised release. Sentencing is scheduled for September 23, 2011. Scalf has been detained, that is, held without bond, since his arraignment on March 7, 2011.
The violation referenced in Count 1 occurred on January 25, 2011, when Scalf was arrested in a Wal-Mart, in Collinsville, Illinois, for stealing little girl's underwear. Because of the Scalf's suspicious behavior regarding the cellular telephone in his possession, officers contacted a detective assigned to the FBI's Metro East Cyber Crimes and Analysis Task Force. The detective interviewed Scalf who eventually admitted that there might be "inappropriate" images on his telephone. A search warrant was obtained for the cellular phone, and at least two images of child pornography were found in the "my pictures" folder of the telephone. When confronted with the images, Scalf acknowledged that he possessed the two images of child pornography, and stated that he e-mailed himself the images from his old cellular phone to his current cellular telephone.
With respect to Count 2, Scalf also e-mailed himself images of child pornography between his two different Yahoo e-mail accounts via the internet. One of the occasions in which he did so was on or about July 26 or July 27, 2010, while using a public computer in the library at Southwestern Illinois College.
"There is no legitimate purpose in victimizing children by possessing or transporting child pornography. Such images victimize the child over and over again. I have high praise for the officers whose instincts led them to look beyond a mere shoplifting and prevent a much worse crime!" said United States Attorney Wigginton.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by United States Attorneys' Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. For more information about Project Safe Childhood, please visit www.projectsafechildhood.gov.
The case was investigated by the Collinsville, Illinois, Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Metro East Cyber Crimes and Analysis Task Force. The case is assigned to Assistant United States Attorney Angela Scott.

Online-privacy fears track technology; Some urge shielding users' Web habits.(ECONOMY)
Byline: Tim Devaney, THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Talk of restricting advertisers from tracking consumers' online habits should be expanded beyond traditional computers to include newer devices capable of accessing the Internet if regulators want regulations to remain relevant in coming years, online privacy experts say.
Our devices are becoming more connected, said Ashkan Soltani, a researcher and consultant on privacy, security and behavioral economics. So they're going to have the same privacy concerns as do our computers.
Mr. Soltani was part of a panel on Enabling Online Privacy that spoke to lawmakers and staffers on Capitol Hill on Tuesday. Congress is considering legislation for a Do Not Track Internet policy that has been compared to the Do Not Call list for phones.
Technology giants, such as Apple Inc. and Google Inc., are building Internet TVs that allow users to browse the Web while viewing programs. Automakers also are equipping vehicles with Internet access. And, of course, smartphones can browse the Web.
In all of these areas, the potential exists to track consumers habits, Mr. Soltani said.
The Federal Trade Commission, which discussed a Do Not Track policy in its December 2010 report, would be interested in expanding regulations to include browser devices, such as computers and smartphones, said panel member Maneesha Mithal, associate director of the FTC's division of privacy and identity protection. This would cover consumers who download smartphone apps, which can currently track their location, as well as those who shop online.
All other devices, such as TVs and cars, should give consumers a choice about whether they want to be tracked, she said, but not necessarily included in the Do Not Track policy.
The bottom line is there should be a choice, Miss Mithal said.
Online advertisers go to great lengths to track viewers' habits and interests, experts say, which isn't all bad. Most viewers appreciate when the website they are browsing personalizes their experience with tracking mechanisms. This happens at Amazon.com. When a viewer makes a purchase, the website records it, and next time they show up, it suggests a similar product. This also happens at ESPN.com, when sports fans tailor the website to their favorite teams.
If you're on ESPN and you see an ad for a baseball game, that should be expected, Mr. Soltani said.
While consumers plan to be tracked by the websites they visit, he said the controversy arises when third-party or invisible advertisers that are hidden on the site gather information about unsuspecting viewers.
If you go to ESPN and get a drug ad, because yesterday you visited WebMD, that's a problem, Mr. Soltani added.
Erich Andersen, vice president and deputy general counsel at Microsoft and another panel member, agreed, saying that consumers are generally happy about personalization features on websites. But if I'm moving from site to site and keep seeing the same Viagra ad, that's a problem.
Regulators must be careful to combat the intrusive ads, while not interfering with the legitimate tracking services that have led to a booming online advertising industry, experts say.
We have to be very careful about not killing the goose that's laying golden eggs, Mr. Andersen said. Advertising is very important in the digital economy.

Organ is key to pupils' movie.(News)
Byline: TONY COLLINS
A GROUP of junior filmmakers in Birmingham have helped to immortalise the new organ in Symphony Hall.
Ten pupils from Bishop Challoner secondary school in Kings Heath have produced an educational film about the organ, which was brought to the city after a massive fundraising appeal.
They created the video with the help of Kings Norton-based pro-duction company C21VOX, which specialises in work in the arts and education.
Additional expertise was provided by local film-maker John Humphreys, who has done promos for local band UB40, and Matt Watkins, who is based at the Custard Factory.
The project will now result in the completed film being broadcast on the internet at 4pm today from a mini studio created within the musical venue.
Daniel O'Connell, of C21VOX, said: 'Pupils came up with the idea of making an educational film about the organ to try to make it more interesting to children.
'There will be elements of animation in the film, but it will be mostly live action.'
The video can be viewed by accessing: www.c21vox.tv/broadcast.
Challenges for Fairfax.
Oct 12, 2003 (The New Investor - ABIX via COMTEX)
The fortunes of Australian publishing group John Fairfax Holdings depend on those of the advertising market. At the moment advertising prospects are looking up, and Fairfax should benefit. Its currently hard-hit financial press should particularly benefit from an economic recovery. Analysts are projecting an increase of 30% in the company's net profit for 2003-04. However, the longer-term outlook for the stock is less certain, as the Internet is likely to inflict some damage on its print-based business model, especially when it comes to the profitable classified advertising revenue stream. Both Publishing & Broadcasting and News Limited have launched initiatives in this area. Fairfax is also likely to come under pressure from changes to the way circulation is audited, with freely distributed copies no longer allowed as part of the core audit.

3. Fill out your application neatly with a dark ink pen. When providing your e-mail address, include the domain (like yahoo.com). For your own safety, we suggest that each pen pal provide an e-mail address or obtain a post office box instead of giving out a home address.
4. Once we receive your completed application and payment, we'll match you with five girls in the United States or Canada who share your interests. (We're good with this matchmaking stuff.)
5. The most important thing is to follow our rules on being a safe pen pal. And write back, for Pete's sake!

According to the companies, as the core development partner, Sprint is integrating cellular network connectivity into the Peterbilt SmartNav. The in-dash technology system utilizes a high-resolution, 7-in. touch panel display. Together, navigation and business systems will be provided with vehicle connectivity services for drivers to easily and safely use while traveling. When a truck is not in motion, the driver will be able to access the Internet and send and receive e-mails to enhance communications with dispatchers, logistics providers and shippers. The Sprint connectivity service is available as an option.
SmartNav also includes hands-free phoning with Bluetooth, back-up camera options, vehicle data and audio controls, including satellite radio, AM/FM, CD, MP3 and USB. When launched in 2011, Peterbilt SmartNav will become standard on Peterbilt trucks with all premium interior trim offerings and on diesel-electric hybrid vehicles, the truck maker said. The system also will be available as an upgrade on any Peterbilt standard trim package. SmartNav was developed on the award-winning Microsoft Windows Embedded Automotive 7 software platform.
DiabetesMine[TM] Launches 2011 Design Challenge; Fostering Innovation to Improve Life with Diabetes.
$25,000.00 in cash prizes and entrepreneurial help for best new creative tools for managing diabetes
SAN FRANCISCO -- DiabetesMine[TM], a leading informational and community web site for people with diabetes, today announced kickoff of the 2011 DiabetesMine Design Challenge, a competition that fosters innovation in the creation of new tools designed to improve life with diabetes.
This annual web-based competition, hosted at www.diabetesmine.com/designcontest, calls for fresh ideas for new devices, web applications, or other instruments designed to help people live better with diabetes. The contest is underwritten by the California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF), an independent philanthropy committed to improving the way health care is delivered and financed in California and beyond. It is also supported by the global design and innovation firm IDEO, headquartered in Palo Alto, CA, and endorsed by Medgadget.com, the Internet journal of emerging medical technologies.
In past years, the competition garnered hundreds of ingenious entries - from colorful 'virtual worlds' that teach people about managing diabetes; to a variety of Smartphone applications that help track carbohydrates, glucose data and more; to safety scanners that guard against driving with dangerously low blood sugar. One standout Grand Prize last year was a visionary system combining a continuous glucose monitor and insulin pump into a simple, aesthetic arm band.
"Advances in technology have already been hugely beneficial in terms of changing the way people live with diabetes, and we're very committed to further cultivating new tools to help them live healthier, longer, and less stressful lives," said Jeffrey Brewer, President and CEO of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). "This contest has created a great deal of buzz within the diabetes industry, really helping to push the evolution of medical devices."
This competition is open to any individuals or organizations passionate about diabetes and product design - whether you're an enterprising patient or caregiver, a startup company, a design student, an independent developer or engineer, or an R&D pro. Entries from participants age 17 and under are also welcome, and will be judged in a separate category.
To help refine and realize their design concepts, three winners will each receive the following prizes:
* $7,000 in cash, plus: | |||||
- a complimentary consulting session with Health and Wellness experts at the global design and innovation firm IDEO
- a free access ticket to the "innovation incubator" Health 2.0 Conference planned for September 2011 in San Francisco, CA
- introduction to Silicon Valley investors and other relevant experts
- additional hands-on assistance towards commercialization of your design idea, as appropriate
Two additional prizes will also be awarded: $2,500 cash for the "Most Creative Idea" and $1,500 cash for the "Best Kids' Concept" (age 17 and under)
(total cash prizes $25,000)
For the second year in a row, open community voting on the website will determine the top 10 finalists for this competition. Final winner selections will be made by a group of expert judges with deep expertise in diabetes care, medical technologies, design, and venture capital funding. Submissions are accepted in the form of a 2-3 minute video to be uploaded to YouTube, or a 2-3 page written "elevator pitch" plus supporting graphics, also to be uploaded online. The deadline for entries is Friday, April 29th, 2011, at 11:59 pm Pacific time. Winners will be announced on Monday, June 13th, 2011.
"CHCF is committed to improving quality of care for patients with chronic conditions," said Sophia Chang, director of the Foundation's Better Chronic Disease Care program. "Once again, we are delighted to support this design contest, which encourages and rewards innovative thinking and the development of new tools for diabetes."
The Design Challenge concept was born in Spring 2007, when creator of DiabetesMine Amy Tenderich posted an Open Letter to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, calling for the gurus of consumer design to help revolutionize design of diabetes devices. In the weeks and months that followed, numerous individuals and organizations came forward with compelling new prototypes, designs, and ideas.
"We're very excited to expand the reach of the contest this year," said Tenderich. "Not only do we look forward to another bounty of creative submissions, but we're also planning a Diabetes Innovation Summit event that will bring together patient advocates, medical device designers, investors and other experts. It's all about making 'patient-centered care' a truly meaningful term."
